This is a self-directed course delivered to you online through the British Plastic Federation’s learning platform PolymerCourses. It’s completely flexible, you choose when and how to engage with the materials.

Course content:

Get an overview of the meaning of sustainability and the circular economy. Understand the benefits of using recycled content for business and the environment.

Understand what the UK and EU regularity requirements are for using recycled content in packaging. This section will also give you an overview of relevant policies around the world.

Understand the challenges, opportunities and technical considerations when incorporating recycled content into products and packaging.

This section will give you an overview of the different standards and methods available when auditing and reporting that your product contains recycled material.

Learn how to make a reliable and verifiable claim when stating environmental benefits, performance, properties, or characteristics of a product.

This section will dive into the importance of regularly monitoring quality of a product that has recycled content. Then you can adjust your usage and manufacturing parameters to match your product goals.

You will learn how to make modifications in design to allow effective use of recycled materials. This section will also establish best practice for packaging design to ensure the product is recyclable at the end of its life.

Suzanne Johnston

Operations Director, PS Partnerships & Consultancy Ltd

Suzanne Johnston is Director, and co-owner of PS Partnerships & Consultancy, a specialist, independent plastics consultancy.  Having spent most of her career developing and coordinating large national and EU-funded projects in the plastics industry, she has honed her skills in managing and supporting technical teams to deliver successful R&D and innovation projects.

Suzanne takes the lead in PS Partnerships sustainability projects, helping businesses to improve the sustainability of their products and processes and reducing their impact on the environment, particularly when using plastics.  She was one of the technical authors of PAS 510, the world’s first plastic pellet loss prevention standard, and now works with businesses to implement the PAS as well as auditing against its requirements.

Suzanne helps companies achieve compliance to international standards, regulations and legislation through the introduction of information, certification and management systems. She supports businesses with their regulatory and compliance documentation across a number of industry sectors including construction, medical, packaging, plastics and engineering.

Adam Bolsover

Senior R&D Engineer, Nelipak

Adam is Senior R&D Engineer at Nelipak and chair of the Technical & Environment Committee of the British Plastics Federation’s Plastics and Flexible Packaging Group.

He studied at the University of Nottingham, where he graduated with a MSci in Chemistry. His career focusing on Technical Management and Food Contact Compliance for flexible food packaging has spanned the Packaging Industry, including St. Johns Packaging, Mondi, Coveris, Ultimate Packaging and FFP. His experience includes purchasing, commercials, accreditations and sustainability.

Brian Lodge

Director of Plastics and Flexible Packaging, BPF

The content of this course was developed by the British Plastics Federation (BPF) Director of Plastics and Flexible Packaging, Brian Lodge. Prior to the BPF, Brian lead as UK Design Director at the world’s largest innovative packaging manufacturer Berry Global.

Brian has over 40 years’ experience in packaging design, mainly working in the plastics industry. He has worked on a wide range of products in the UK, Europe and Africa for converters, design consultancies and brand owners.

Brian’s main interests lay in design for the circular economy and producing packaging that is more sustainable while meeting the needs of the brand, supply chain, the consumer and the product.
